What is Krav Maga?
Krav Maga (meaning “contact combat” in Hebrew) is the unarmed fighting system of the Israeli Defense Force. It is a continually tested and updated system of fighting that is designed to be, at its core, fast and quick to learn. The system is recognized internationally by law-enforcement agencies as being the most effective system of self-defense in existence. Whilst many martial arts claim that their techniques don’t rely on size, strength and athleticism, Krav Maga is a system where this has to be the case as it is taught to all new recruits – male and female – who join the IDF. This means it genuinely has to be able to work for everybody regardless of physical skills and abilities etc. At Krav Maga Yashir Boston we stay true to the original concepts and principles of the system and don’t combine it with other martial arts. Real world self-defense involves surviving real-world violent attacks, and the tactics and strategies to do this are different to those involved in ring/cage combat sports etc. Our Krav Maga syllabus/program is comprehensive and will teach you how to fight and survive on the ground, deal with all manner of weapon threats and attacks, and strike, punch and grapple was well. Krav Maga Books By Gershon Ben Keren
Gershon Ben Keren, has so far written three books on Krav Maga, the first being in 2014. He was initially approached by Tuttle Publishing in 2012 to write and shoot the first full color Krav Maga book. "Krav Maga - Real World Solutions to Real World Violence", demonstrated Krav Maga techniques and solutions, in the settings where violence was likely to be encountered e.g., in bars, pubs, on streets outside ATM's etc., with techniques being photographed against full speed attacks, capturing the dynamic nature of real-life assaults etc. The subsequent Krav Maga books followed the same process and methodology, with photographs being taken in Boston locations. He also conducted two Google Author Talks about the first two books which can be accessed by clicking here.
Krav Maga Blog
The “Krav Maga Blog” was started in 2012, initially as a project, to educate and inform members of Krav Maga Yashir Boston, about the concepts and fighting ideas that inform the Krav Maga approach/method. Since then, it has grown into something much larger, that looks to educate a wider audience about violence and violent offending, and presenting solutions that involve predicting, identifying and avoiding it and being victimized. With over 700 articles and being updated weekly it is a useful tool and resource for learning about violence. It is organized hierarchically by topic and subject matter however it is also searchable. Whether you are looking for explanations of criminological theories, and why and how people engage in violent incidents there are articles that will answer your questions. There are also articles on personal safety, the legal aspects of self-defense, along with those on risk management and mitigation etc. You can access the Krav Maga blog by clicking the button below.

Violence is a process and occurs along a timeline; with several definable phases. Being able to effectively operate in each one, is the key to being successful, when dealing with a potentially aggressive/violent assailant(s). With an understanding of how predatory individuals operate, and good situational awareness (being able to identify the pre-violence indicators, that precede an assault), most violent situations can be identified and avoided before they occur, and if confronted by social violence, most disputes can be dealt with using diffusion and de-escalation methods We may imagine that we are most likely to be attacked, without warning, however these types of assault, are not the norm, and most violence occurs face-to-face, and is preceded by dialogue (this is true for both men and women). Knowing what to say, not what to say, and how to act and behave are key skills both in avoiding a physical confrontation and preparing yourself to deal with it. Our training encompasses and includes this Self-Protection and Personal Safety Piece, and recognizes its importance, when dealing with violence. Equally we recognize, the potential post-conflict issues that arise from being involved in a violent confrontation, and offer Tactical Medical Training (to learn more about this, Tactical Medical Training click here). egal consequences, and ramifications that might occur from different responses, and factor this into our training. Although, we teach a military system of self-defense, we recognize how it must be adapted to a civilian setting – Krav Maga is something we use, make relevant, and put into context, rather than something we simply teach as a system. Violence doesn’t occur in a vacuum, and the situational components that accompany it need to be put in place, to create and offer effective solutions to it. Dealing with real-life situations, requires more than simply learning self-defense techniques, this is why we refer to what we teach as “Tactical Survival”.
We use a variety of training methods to physically equip our students to deal with not just the physical aspects of an assault/attack, but also the psychological and emotional components. It is one thing to execute techniques in a "sterile" training environment, and another thing to try and do so under the stress and duress of a real-life confrontation. We make use of Environmental Training where we make use of different environments, such as the beach, water, woodlands etc. to increase the difficulties of technique execution as well as CQC and Scenario Based Training, to add various real-life factors to our training.

Beginner ClassesOur kids and teens Krav Maga classes teach age-appropriate self-defense and personal safety training. The threats and dangers that children and teens face are often very different to the ones that adults. Our approach when teaching all age groups, it to make sure that our solutions are reality-based i.e. that they reflect the realities, that an individual is likely to face. For children and teens, part of that reality is often having to deal with multiple assailants, as individuals this age spend a large part of their time in groups, and are therefore more likely to target an individual when with others – this is particularly true with incidents of school bullying. These realities are by-and-large different to the ones that adults face, and our Kids and Teens Krav Maga program reflects this.
The physical solutions that we teach are also matched to the maturity level of the age group e.g. a 5-year old is not going to fully understand the potential consequences of applying a joint-lock, to a wrist or an arm, and so these techniques are taught later on in our program, and other solutions and techniques are presented instead. As with our adult program, there is a strong emphasis on predicting, identifying and avoiding violence, along with training in de-escalation and conflict resolution. We take time to explain, when it is appropriate to use a physical solution, and when it is better to use other methods to deal with aggression and potential violence.
Our program also places a strong emphasis on developing skills and attributes, such as improving balance, co-ordination and fitness. Not only are these things necessary in order to allow physical self-defense solutions to be applied effectively, they are also necessary for the general physical development of children and teenagers.
Our Children’s Krav Maga classes are appropriate for kids aged 6 to 12 (if your child has a younger sibling, who is looking to attend with them, please contact us, and we can discuss if this would be appropriate) and our Teen Krav Maga classes are suitable for teenagers, aged 13 to 17. If you are interested in coming down to take a free class, please use the contact form which can be accessed by clicking here, and we can arrange a trial session.
