About Krav Maga
About Krav Maga Yashir Boston
Krav Maga is a brutally efficient form of self-defense, its blend of simplicity, aggression, and adaptability makes it one of the most effective and widely respected self-defense systems in the modern world. Its roots in real-world combat and its continued evolution for modern-day threats ensure that it remains a practical and powerful means of personal protection. Whether for military, law enforcement, or civilian use, Krav Maga teaches people how to stay safe and react quickly in dangerous situations. Krav Maga is used by numerous military and law enforcement agencies worldwide, including the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the FBI, and other security forces. Its practical and direct approach has also made it suitable for civilians looking for proven and effective self-defense training. The Civilian Krav Maga Program taught at Krav Maga Yashir Boston looks at the types of threats and attacks, people are likely to face as part of their routine activities, such as common assaults (both unarmed assaults and those involving weapons etc.) and street/robberies/muggings. Part of the training offered in our adult program is that which involves the identification and avoidance of such threats so the potential for responding physically is eliminated – Head Instructor Gershon Ben Keren is a criminologist who has studied violence for many years, as well as dealing with it when working as a private security contractor, and so brings both a researched/evidential approach to predicting, preventing and dealing with violence, from his own personal experiences. Why is Krav Maga so Effective
There are several reasons why Krav Maga has proven to be such an effective system of fighting/self-defense, and why many law-enforcement agencies and militaries have adopted it as their hand-to-hand combat system. Three of the reasons to explain its effectiveness are listed/described below:
- Use of Natural/Instinctive Movements – Krav Maga is about what you will do when attacked, rather than what you may want to do. A fighter who steps into a ring in a combat sport, knows when the fight will begin, who they are fighting etc., and so can mentally prepare for the upcoming match/fight. Real-life violence is non-consensual and may happen with no warning. In such situations there is no/little time to prepare a response, and you will be working solely with the way the body naturally reacts in such situations. Krav Maga recognizes this and works with the body’s instinctive and instinctual responses.
- Using “Families of Techniques” – Krav Maga reuses movements that deal with one attack/threat to deal with others. By cutting down the number of movements a student has to learn it means that more time can be spent practicing techniques rather than having to learn them e.g., if the defense to a rear-strangle is almost identical to the defense against a rear-knife threat, then when a student is practicing one of these solutions, they are also practicing the other. By using a few simple movements Krav Maga deals with a large array of threats and attacks.
- Simplified Decision Making – Krav Maga divides threats and attacks into two kinds: life-threatening, and non-life-threatening, helping to speed up threat identification and the appropriate response etc. Knowing how to respond in the shortest possible time is extremely important when looking to survive a violent encounter, and this can be accomplished using simple decision trees.
Krav Maga techniques and solutions are also designed to work when a person is under stress and duress and fatigued. This acknowledges the realities of real-world violence, when adrenaline wears off and the body goes into recovery; something which regularly happens when people are attacked/assaulted. Krav Maga acknowledges that an individual is likely to have to fight in their worst physical state and insurances are built into the solutions so that techniques will work when performed sub-optimally or in an incomplete form e.g., certain parts of a technique aren’t performed.
