Cosher Kravi (Combat Fitness) at Krav Maga Yashir

If you are looking to improve your fitness but hate the treadmill and don’t enjoy the gym training in Krav Maga may be an effective alternative. At Krav Maga Yashir Boston our Krav Maga program also incorporates some of the IDF’s (Israeli Defense Force), Cosher Kravi training methods that are used to get new recruits fit and combat ready in the shortest possible time. Employing drills and games, the focus is on building fighting skills, whilst developing and improving both aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Rather than employing calisthenics as a workout, we use calisthenic exercises in our Krav Maga training to help build and develop fighting skills e.g., you may be performing exercises such as push-ups whilst also having to perform overhead blocks etc., or as you are performing squats you will have to move to keep facing a partner, who at some point will attack you with a training knife etc. Working this way, you build up your strength and aerobic/anaerobic fitness whilst focusing on something other than the exercise itself i.e., you improve your “combat fitness” whilst learning and practicing techniques and solutions to violence etc.

One of the ways that Krav Maga training simulates the negative effects of adrenaline (once the effects of adrenaline wear off, the body goes into “recovery” mode), and fatigue, which are commonly experienced in violent encounters, is to use exercise to create short-term tiredness e.g., you may perform an exercise such as burpees or push-ups to fatigue the arms before practicing a gun disarm or similar. With the arms temporarily exhausted, it will replicate the “feeling” that you would have if you had to perform such a solution in a real-life, violent encounter. Again, because the goal is to perform a task based on a technique this is where your focus will be rather than on the push-up or burpee itself.

During this “process” and overtime it is likely that your attitude to exercise will also change. Part of Krav Maga training is to develop a “never give up” mindset. One which will allow you to keep going and going regardless of the discomfort and fatigue you may experience when dealing with assailants who mean to cause you harm etc. Sometimes in a fight it is simply the will to keep going which ensures survival i.e., you physically out last an attacker, because you have the mindset and the experience to push through. At Krav Maga Yashir Boston, we teach reality-based self-defense that is based on simple techniques, a never give up mentality, and physical fitness. Your goal when starting our Krav Maga program may not be to improve your fitness, however by learning to defend yourself, you will improve it.
